Then:
In 1954 I enlisted into the Army Apprentices School at Balcombe in Victoria. After graduation, I was posted to various Army Workshops, undertaking further training & eventually promoted as an Artificer (for Infantry blokes, that means I was good at fixing things you often broke). Obtained my commission as a Lieutenant & posted to TPNG Workshop. My next appointment was as OC 18 Field Squadron Workshop. After that, service in Vietnam (March 70 – March 71), as OC 17 Construction Squadron Workshop.
On my return, I was appointed OC North Queensland Area Workshop, based in Townsville. Then I was transferred to 5 Base Workshop RAAF Base Amberley, serving as Administration Major. Next was a posting to the UK on exchange, with REME Support Group. Back in Oz, I was appointed OC Scales Section, at the HQ Logistic Command in Melbourne. My next role was Logistics Officer, with the Joint Exercise Planning Staff on the Multinational Kangaroo Exercise.
Eventually I resigned my Commission & took up an appointment as Quality Manager with Jaguar Rover Australia. At the same time I was also Assistant Project Manager for Project Perentie –which was to supply over 3,000 Land Rovers to the Army. Finally, I accepted an appointment as Quality Manager ADI Lithgow (the small arms factory, now Thales Australia), afterwhich I decided to retire.
Now:
Although retired, I am totally involved with our Association as a volunteer, addressing the welfare of our members & all veterans.
Other Interests:
My four grandchildren are a delight to me despite the large age difference between the youngest and eldest. I enjoy good food, good wine and good fellowship, be it in Australia or when visiting my many overseas friends.
